'The Artist' se llevó cuatro premios Independent Spirit Awards, los correspondientes a mejor película, mejor director (Michel Hazanavicius), mejor actor (Jean Dujardin) y mejor fotografía (Guillame Schiffman), dejando virtualmente de vacío a 'Take Shelter', su gran rival de la noche que tan sólo pudo sumar una mención para su productora, Sophia Lin, en una entrega de premios que fue presentada por el actor Seth Rogen.

Por otro lado Michelle Williams se hizo con el galardón a la mejor actriz gracias a su trabajo en la recién estrenada en España, 'Mi semana con Marilyn', mientras que Christopher Plummer fue premiado por su labor en 'Beginners (Principiantes)' con el galardón al mejor actor secundario.

Por su parte 'Los descendientes' se hizo con dos galardones, los correspondientes al mejor guión (para Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon y Jim Rash) y mejor actriz de reparto (para Shailene Woodley). 'Margin Call', como mejor ópera prima y mejor reparto; 'Nader y Simin, una separación', como mejor película extranjera; o '50/50' como mejor primer guión, fueron otras de las galardonas.
