New York: DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc, the studio behind the Shrek franchise and this summer's Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, is in talks with Sony Pictures Entertainment about distributing its films, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions.

Under a contract that expires in 2013, DreamWorks pays Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures 8 per cent of film revenues generated at movie theatres and on DVD. Last year, Paramount rejected a request from DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg to extend the agreement and lower the fee to 7 per cent.

DreamWorks has told analysts that it intends to sign a new agreement by mid-year to give it time to create marketing campaigns needed for next year's films.

Few details have been agreed with Sony, and an announcement is not expected soon, according to the source. Katzenberg had sought to create his own distribution operation, and may still agree only to have Sony distribute the films internationally

Paramount is said to average $50 million (Dh183.7 million) in revenues for each DreamWorks film, after covering its costs, according to one person with knowledge of the agreement.

Paramount's last DreamWorks release is Rise of the Guardians, a story in which Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and Jack Frost save the world's children. It is scheduled for release on November 12.

DreamWorks Animation, which had a prior distribution arrangement with Universal Pictures that expired in 2008, had decided against distributing its own films worldwide, according to the Los Angeles Times, which first reported the news.

Katzenberg has talked in the past to Fox, a unit of News Corp, and Warner Brothers, which is part of Time Warner Inc.

DreamWorks and Sony had no comment. Paramount could not be reached for comment.

Dreamworks Studios, Steven Spielberg's live-action film company, is a separate company whose films are released by Walt Disney Co.

Esta en inglés,pero os comento lo importante,la Fox alternará los títulos de Dreamworks Animation con los de Blue Sky,colocándose como el estudio líder del cine de animación.

DreamWorks Animation has announced it has entered into a five-year marketing and distribution agreement with Twentieth Century Fox. The company has been distributing its films through Paramount Pictures and will end that relationship in November with Rise of the Guardians. Here's the full announcement:

DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. (DWA) today announced that the Company has entered into a new five-year distribution agreement with Twentieth Century Fox.

Under the terms of the agreement, Fox will assume certain marketing and distribution responsibilities in both domestic and international markets for all animated feature films produced by DreamWorks Animation for release in 2013 through 2017.

"Fox has long been an industry leader in both theatrical and home video thanks in large part to its well-integrated approach to distribution across a wide range of platforms around the globe," said Jeffrey Katzenberg, Chief Executive Officer of DreamWorks Animation. "Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman have built a world-class distribution team and we are excited to apply their expertise, robust infrastructure and global resources so that DreamWorks Animation's films can reach their fullest possible potential over the next five years."

"However, our new agreement with Fox presents more favorable economics overall for DreamWorks Animation because we are taking advantage of lower costs associated with the emerging digital distribution landscape and managing domestic television distribution in-house."

Under the terms of the agreement, Fox will receive a distribution fee on worldwide theatrical and home video gross receipts as well as on international television, and on certain digital businesses, including rentals, SVOD and EST. DreamWorks Animation will retain the rights to distribute its product in the domestic television windows without paying a fee to Fox.

Para no dar lugar a confusión,la próxima de Dreamworks Animation: EL ORIGEN DE LOS GUARDIANES,aún la llevará Paramount,pues ese es su último título.

A partir de la siguiente THE CROODS ya la llevará la Fox.

He encontrado un artículo en Yahoo donde habla de como fue el año 2012 para Dreamworks Animation y como esperan el 2013 en su inicio de su acuerdo con Fox:

Y hay una comparativa entre la distribución de Paramount y la distribución con Fox.

La mayor sorpresa (al menos para mí) es ver que hay dos territorios donde Fox no distribuirá a Dreamworks Animation: China y Corea del Sur
Gracias al poster coreano de Los Croods he visto que ahora en Corea del Sur los títulos de Dreamworks Animation los llevará CJ Entertainment. (Una vez más vuelvo a expresar mi admiración por esa gran, gran empresa)

Lo que sí estuve leyendo en otro artículo es que la idea del retraso de 'Mr. Peabody and Sherman' hasta el 2014 parte de la Fox, que advirtió a DreamWorks de que no debía estrenar más de dos películas al año. Y la culpa la tiene en que en su empeño por competir con Pixar se gastan un pastón en cada película, 150 millones mínimo por película, lo mismo que hace Pixar en realidad aunque estos le sepan sacar un mayor partido a ese dinero al ser otro proceso creativo distinto.

Pongamos de ejemplo el teórico de El origen de los guardianes: 300 millones en todo el mundo recaudados... y aún así es un "fracaso", un fracaso que ha causado directamente la cancelación de 'Me and My Shadow', y es que dado su presupuesto y demás estaba previsto que tuviera que recaudar al menos 225 millones en Estados Unidos cuando apenas ha hecho 100. Por lo que leí en el artículo mencionado decía que Fox le estaba apretando a DreamWorks para que tomara ejemplo de Blue Sky, con producciones que no cuestan más de 100 millones y que en cuando superan esos 300 millones ya son toda una alegría más que rentable.

Pues he podido comprobar en Fox in flight y Dvdgo la confirmación de que Paramount ya ha perdido los derechos de las películas de Dreamworks Animation que tenían antes de ser estas estrenadas por Fox.

Ahora Fox lleva la distribución total de todo el catálogo de Dreamworks Animation a nivel mundial excepto en dos fuertes mercados asiáticos: Corea del Sur (donde lo lleva CJ Entertainment) y China (donde lo lleva la propia Dreamworks a través de su filial Oriental Dreamworks*)
